I haven't figured out whether the scent also does it, but I actually hate the scent so I avoid that too anyway. I think it's a subconscious thing due to the association with the misery. Or maybe it's fear that they use real pine to get the pine scent... hrm... never really thought about it... So yeah, I'm generally allergic to pollen type stuff, but pine needles especially can get to me. Even pine needle droppings in the elevator of my apartment building (suffered through that one a couple days ago). Worst was when I discovered the allergy as a teenager. I raked pine needles in the back yard for a couple hours, and had difficulty breathing for 3 days. Of course, I spent those 2-3 straight hours in close proximity with living pine trees and about 3-trashcans full of fallen needles... so that might have something to do with the extremity of the allergic reaction...
