It might interest you further to know that a ballet dancer will often use a HAMMER or some other such hard object in order to help break the shoes in -- also that in the course of a full-length ballet such as Giselle, a dancer may well go through more than one pair in the course of the performance. An interesting challenge for an engineer, perhaps? Instead of "building a better mousetrap", build a better toe shoe! Something which would not necessarily need to be broken in quite so hard before it can really be used, since that no doubt only hastens the deterioration process...
