I'd have to say spitting on the soldiers as they came home from Viet Nam was *not* "protest [...] out of respect for the armed forces".

Also, I know people in the armed forces who are very disheartened when they hear about protests over the job they're actively engaged in. I remember the Republican party line being something like "once the decision to go to war is made, the debate is over" (loosely translated as, "we got our way, now shut up and let us fight"). But I don't know what the "happy medium" would be, or if we're already there. ::shrug::
