My status as a former smoker is irrelevant except as I have used it to demonstrate that I know what you are talking about, but still reject your arguments for the reasons I have already given.
The case from the original post isn't a civil rights issue, it is an issue of rudeness and rule breaking on the part of those smokers.
For the record, and to show that I am not the monster you seem to have decided I am, I am against the laws that would make all bars and restaurants non-smoking. I think that if smoking is allowed, it should say so on (or near) the doors, so that non-smokers can choose not to enter (as I would), but, as long as tobacco is legal, there is no reason that smokers shouldn't have places to go where they can gather and smoke. Just not where I have no choice but to be exposed to it.
