Smoking: the Real WMD by plblark2003-12-19 09:10:00
ENOUGH ALREADY! by LurkerMo 2003-12-19 09:50:31
I am a reformed smoker. I understand the craving, and am able to forgive those that still succumb to it. Please have some compassion in your heart for those less fortunate than you.

BTW do you drink coffee? Or alcohol? Because some of the points you bring up against tobacco can apply to those as well.

Health effects:
Each cigarette has been estimatred to take 7-11 minutes off a smoker's life This looks like a statistic. You know what they say about statistics, don't you?

second hand smoke is dangerous to the health of smokers and non-smokers alike Around here, smokers are considerate and go out of their way to avoid exposing others. I'm sorry that you don't have such nice neighbors.

Smoking by pregnant mothers has been proven to cause lower birth weight and slower lung development That's nothing against what drinking will do to a child. And are you sure that the effects are not from exposure after birth?

nicotine is a poison So is alcohol, caffeine, and even water in the right amount.

carcinogens abound in cigarettes and their byproducts Studies have shown that there aren't very many substances that don't have carcinogens in them.

Pollution Trash and littering
Everywhere there is an allowed smoking area, there are butts and detrius
I have often seen smokers dump their ash trays out their doors on the ground Again, I am sorry that you live in an area where those who smoke are so inconsiderate.

I often see butts thrown out the window
Air Quality
smoke stinks Many perfumes stink. Personally, I think some flavours of tobacco smell quite nice.

second hand smoke is an irritant and has a lingering odor
Smoke lingers and can discolor or permanently enscent(is that a word) items and people
loss of productivity
I have worked places where "smoke breaks" took at least twice as long as alloted breaks and occured more often
Health issues causing missed work Tobacco is not the greatest contributor to health issues causing missed work. Are you advocating compulsory exersize programs?

Increased health care premiums
For treating of self-induced disorders caused by smoking Enphasema, Asthma, etc... Taxes paid for tobacco products should more than make up for additional health care costs. That is why they were imposed, is it not?

asthma and respiratory distress of non-smokers Again, inconsiderate people put others at risk every day, in every way. Do you have something personal against smokers?

detrimental effects on children exposed to second-hand smoke since medical premiums have oto pay for these issues, and we all share a burden of the cost.. smokers are costing us all money See above re: taxes on tobacco products.

Tobacco is a huge export of America And this is bad - why?

It has been proven that Tobacco companies tried to make their brands MORE addictive And food companies try to make their products more desirable. This is marketing. In Corporate America, it is what you have to do.

and the list could go on and on You do indeed. Are you sure you are over the craving? You sound quite emotional about tobacco.
