when folks are working 80+ hour weeks and only clocking in 40, then you sort of have to give them the time ... you know?

Software development shops don't have enforced break policies for a reason. It cuts too much into productivity. Those stupid geeks will quit volunteering the free overtime, over something so petty, and they'd be right.

Which, BTW, sort of gets back to my point about treating people fairly and not creating unwarranted resentment in your environment.
