Frank, a friend worked for a large IT dept.
Everyone in the Dept smoked
Doug's wife went to work for the American Cancer Society
Frank quit smoking for health reasons and so that his wife would not go to work smelling of smoke where she would come into contact with people trying to quit.
The rest of Frank's department continued to take smoke breaks.
For a week, Frank noted the amount of time that his co-workers were gone.
They were gone for 15 minutes out of every hour by teh time you figured in getting outsied, the long smoke, and getting back inside.
Frank started to log the smoke break times.
Frank started to monitor usage logs to back up his claims
Frank took to reading while his co-workers were on "smoke breaks"
Eventually, someone commented to Frank's supervisor and Frank was confronted
Frank's defense:
Well, boss, since you and everyone else in this Dept are gone during those times and often go together, and since I've been there before and know it's not work related discussion, I figured it was a de-facto if not de jure authorized break.
Frank produces time logs
Frank produces activity logs with huge holes
Boss's Boss wanders by since discussion has gotten heaqted
Frank now ahs a new Boss
Old Dept now has enforced break policies. |
