NASA did it 28 years ago without having the benefit of somebody else's prior experience. As for why NASA's failures get so much press and your success gets so little, in the US missions to Mars aren't news anymore--page six below the fold or in a large paper the science section if they get mentioned at all. NASA screwing up, on the other hand, _is_ news--since you only hear about the screwups it seems like they screw up a lot, but they screw up a lot less than they succeed.
