Who makes good hard drives? by woodchip2003-11-06 19:08:31
You've never heard of infant mortality? by Slamlander 2006-11-19 12:55:59
If something electronic is gonna die then it will do so within 90 days.

I've had WD Caviars run in data centers for 3-4 years and in fact, they'd still be running if they weren't obsolete. Mind you, this is 24x7x365 operation, with greater than 90% uptime. I generally bake a server in for more than 60 days, before considering it a reliable production system.

Granted, 80% of inline production failures is a result of HDD failure. However, that's why I now run RAID whenever I can. RMA the drive you have, then get a second one and a Promise RAID controller. Not only do you proof yourself against most drive failures but the performance is bloody fast as well.

The standard install is for Windows but Linux can use it too.
