Personhood is certainly one of the relevant questions.
Slavery isn't relevant as a comparison, because its structure and implementation isn't consistent over history. It's a red herring.
Birth may be a process, but it is also a time. For example, my birth time was 9:53p.m. of such and such date.
Designating birth as the point of personhood vs. fetus places the emphasis on the natural ttansition from fetus to not-fetus, a transition similar to the artificial one undergone at age of maturity--one side of the birthday you are an infant (legally) and the next an adult. Your status is not based in anyway on your experience, growth, or accomplishments. I would suggest that although the specific time points may differ from group to group, the idea of publicly acknowledged stages of human development are indeed universal. |
