What OS? What FS? How big are the individual files? What command(s) are you using to determine the disk space?

Note that if there are a lot of very small files on some FS's, they will take up more space than they actually need: 

|----------|----------|----------|----------| <- blocks
|fileA--|  |fileB---| |fileC--------------|   <- files
Not that that explains your situation, but it shows how you can't actually trust the number sometimes.
