OMNIMAX is a high-end variant of IMAX... by lonegunman 2006-11-19 12:55:59
... which is a completely different physical film format than "standard" movies. OMNIMAX uses a fisheye lens in front of the IMAX camera/projector... more or less. <g>

IMAX Website WARNING: Heavy graphics, Flash, and a slow server. :/

Something like 15 years ago I saw a PBS special on IMAX that was... let's just say somewhat more interesting and informative than the IMAX website regarding their technology.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization has an IMAX/Omnimax combo theatre, and a nifty glass wall to see into the projector room. The projector head travels up into its space in the centre of the seating area, and the film reels stay down below- just as well; they're ~1m in diameter and ~10cm wide. For (IIRC) a ~45min film.
