ButI might this time!
SO..
What I want to know is: Do other countries categorize people into strict race groups? 'Cause here in the states if you are from Japan, China, N Korea, S Korea, Thailand, etc you are categorized as "asian american" despite the many differences in culture.
If you or your ancestors are from Mexico, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, etc you are "hispanic american" or "latino" despite differences in culture.
If your ancestors came from ANYWHERE in Africa (cept Egypt) you are "african american"...and once again, many difference in culture.*
If your ancestors are from just about anywhere in Europe ('cept Spain, I guess...you'd be "hispanic" then) you are "white" or if you are lucky enough, "caucasion" despite many differences in culture.
Are there any countries sane enough that what culture you come from doesn't matter, and it doesn't have to be checked on forms? I have such a varied background that there are days I almost want to check "other" and simply write "American".
I had a guy from Cameroon in my public speaking class last semester, and I must say his culture was WAY different than most other "african americans" |
