The sufferagists and the early women's movement were working on getting contraceptives legal in the US, so women weren't forced to keep having children until they died in childbirth. Remember also that this was before there was any form of welfare, so if you couldn't afford to feed your kids, they'd go hungry. I don't think abortion was ever legal in the US until Roe v. Wade.
