and inviting me to just say: keep it. possibly, he's trying to guilt me into giving him a tip... in any case, I'nm not buying. My response: " my normal tip is 20%. but since you ask, hand me the money.." propper etiquette: hand me the money and I'll hand you what I want. If I need change, I'll ask... (ex: can you give meall ones means you're getting $4. otherwise, with the change I got, you're getting, $3, $5, or maybe more... though 20% says you're getting $2.40 :-)
