An Issue of Responsibility by Illiad2003-11-06 08:30:47
in canada? legally yes unless the mother by Celticess 2003-11-06 09:08:32
doesn't place him on the birth certificate and unless she never needs welfare. Welfare will make you seek support from the other bio or adoptive parent. You have no choice or you get thrown off benifits. If a woman leaves the fathers name blank on ther certificate he doesn't have to do anything unless he wants parental rights. So if he suddenly decides he wants them later he has to undergo paternity testing and be willing to pay support and possible back support.

In the hypothetical question you put forth question arises as to what do they tell the child? The child will ask at some point where is my daddy and who is my daddy. Lying I think can do more damage the objective truth at a level a child can grasp. Also if both weren't ready for a child you'd think they'd of considered open adoption. That way the child will have access to info on who they are when older but for all intensive purposes they are only genetic parents nothing more for the ones that raise them are their "mom" and "dad."

I've heard of a diffrent varient of your scenario. They take percautions the woman still gets pregnant. She doesn't want it but the father does. Now provided the father will deal with needs during the preganancy and care for the child after newborn stage(if they nurse if not from newborn stage as it will be bottle fed)... I don't see why the mother should be financially responsible she could sign a waiver of rights just as a father could. However unless they sign such a waver just like for men the women would be also financially responsible under canadian law.
