Question: by Egaeus2003-11-06 04:52:16
Important Information... by nelzie 2003-11-06 07:52:45
I would definately upgrade from 98 to XP. Although, you might want to look at adding more memory or a faster T-Bird, if you can locate one for your board. XP works nicely with faster hardware, although it will work with the hardware you note.

Isn't the Viper V770 a Nvidia TNT based video card? I seem to recall that it is. (It's been a few years since I have seen one and mine fried itself a handful of years back.) Anyway, if that is the case, then the latest 'Detonator' drivers from Nvidia will work with it. Of course you will miss out on the Diamond Multimedia 'extras' that come with their drivers for their card. Which you will just have to do without and most people won't even notice missing anyway.

As for the actual update procedure... I would back-up everything off your Win98 partition and DEFINATELY make a Lilo or Grub or whatever boot loader you use boot diskette. (I am assuming you are using some form of Linux.) When you install Windows, ANY flavor it overwrites the Master Boot Record.

As for formating the Win 98 parition, why leave any Win 98 cruft behind? It could adversely affect the performance of WinXP on your system. Also, when you are doing the install, use NTFS for the WinXP file system, unless you MUST have your other OS access the Windows drive. (Sure, there is some support for NTFS under Linux and other 'Alternative OS Platforms', but it's not the best of support; potential data corruptions and all.)

The Windows XP install process gives you a little control over what partitions you overwrite. Just be careful and read everything that is put up on the screen and make sure you understand what it will do before accepting any changes. It might prompt you to change partitions for performance/security reasons, but it is your choice of whether or not to do anything.
