"emerge -u <name of your kernel source" or use -U which means update only... then you compile your kernel again and install it. I upgraded before from vanilla 2.4.20 to 2.4.22... also you can have more than one kernel installed so say you want the gaming kernel and the vanilla yes you can have both in there... just name the bzImage and System.map with names that reflect the second version so you have version 1 and version 2 in there... then set your grup or lilo to point at both as two diffrent entries so when the menu comes up you can choose one kernel or another.
