When it's got more than about a million neurons, it's alive.

I can't see a reason other than "ALL animal life is sacred, don't kill anything without a cell wall" for preventing abortion or contraception before this point, as it's just a bunch of cells with the same DNA before that.

I would argue that sentience is the key point - we know that human sentience has something to do with neurons, so as soon as it's got a tenth the number of neurons of a dog then it's getting close to the borderline.
