In many circumstances, laws try to draw a line (one side legal, one illegal) on a complex continuum, like the abortion issue. A better way of looking at it would be to base it on a sliding scale; eg, if it's just "I don't want a baby" = not allowed/only in early stages, valid medical reasons/rape cases = always allowed, other issues, allowed up to a point.
Bottom line, tempting though it may be to say "Thou shalt not allow abortions" or "Abortions to anyone who wants one", both points of view are extremes that probably shouldn't be pandered to.
Further on the specific issue of abortion, trying to decide when the embryo/baby becomes "alive" is somewhat futile, since that is a philosophical, not physical, issue; one person's beliefs might say it counts from conception, another might say not until it can survive on its own, others in between. |
