There is no provision for exceptions, except the life of the mother. The administration defines all 3rd-trimester fetuses as viable per se.
The dangers to the mother do change between an abortion, full-delivery inducement, and C-section (especially the latter).
C-section is very major surgery and requires a recovery time of up to 4 mos. and can impair future pregnancies. The differences there should be fairly obvious. Full-delivery inducement involves the flooding of the body with oxytocin and waiting for the natural expulsion of the fetus/infant. Labor can take up to 96 hours (granted if the goal is a healthy, happy baby C-section is performed long before then, but then we're talking major surgery again). With abortion, excessive amounts of hormones are not required (as a healthy, happy baby is not the goal) and various suctioning tools can be used to help extract the fetal material.
So yeah, there are differences for the mother between being allowed to abort (even at a late-term) and being forced to deliver. |
