this is a no-brainer. Any NT product is better (more stable, more secure) than any 9x product. Since you want a desktop OS, not a server OS, XP is your only choice. And because it is a desktop OS, it has far better driver support than anything else. Lucky you!
Whatever you do, don't try and "upgrade". A nice clean install is the thing to do.
A useful tip - if you want to turn off all the annoying "effects" at once, go to System Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Adjust for best performance.
