WARNING: FROM HERE ON DOWN ARE SPOILERS! DO NOT READ ANYMORE!
I just saw it earlier today, after I got off work.
I enjoyed it...but I didn't. I personally really liked the second movie, and I had hoped that this movie would complete it and make it a super-excelllent movie. I don't quite feel that happened. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I had previously read GALVATRON's Matrix spoiler, and I was kind of expecting (and really hoping for) that to happen. When they go up over the machines at the edge of the fields, up into the sky, I'm hoping to find them coming back down to human civilization. That obviously didn't happen.
I did love the part at the beginning with the Merovingian. That was really cool. But the entire rest of the movie was basically just the machines attacking Zion. The mechs kicked ass, but it was entirely too predictable, even to the point of who would live and who would die.
And the ending...still not entirely sure how I feel about that. The whole sunrise thing was overly cheesy, and I don't think it was really satisfactorily resolved anyways. So Zion gets to live. So what? What kind of a pathetic existence do they have down there anyways? Eating processed crap, being packed together like sardines...they can't really return to the surface either. It's a kind of a letdown overall, IMO.
Perhaps I'm still being too swayed by Galvatron's theories...but to me, I really don't know how they could have sucessfully resolved it. So the war is over. Now what? Are the machines suddenly going to stop using humans as batteries? Are they just going to keep all those people in the Matrix, for no real reason at all? How and why are people going to "escape"? What will there be to escape from? There are no "enemies" anymore. It's one thing to be fighting for freedom, it's another to be running from a safe comfortable world to a completely unknown one, which is significantly less "nice" than the old one, and there's no real incentive to do so.
I still think that Neo, at least, should have been a robot. That, at the very least, would have made a lot of sense. It would explain his powers outside the Matrix, how he was "tapped into the Source", how he could see in the "code" (infrared sensors, anyone?), etc. etc.
I just don't think the ending was as "triumphant" as they made it seem.
But I'll go see it at least one more time, likely on the IMAX. And I'll go in knowing exactly what will happen, thus allowing me to enjoy the movie itself for what it is.
Also....I don't think I was the only one who was crying when a certain major character died? Except some complete arsehole started clapping right then and just got me pissed off. Ah well, that's the problem with seeing a sold-out show. There are always the bastards.
On another note....the previews. I am SO gonna be seeing Troy and Shrek 2 when they come out :D
