Seemingly, Orthodox Jews believe that the messiah will come and give them a homeland and they are not allowed to create a homeland for themselves prior to this time.

Thus, Zionists are those Jews who have chosen to create a homeland rather than wait for divine intervention.

Note that this came from a couple of Orthodox friends, so it's still only part of the story.
