That ought to be drummed into my head. You can spend too much time with computers. I'm studying computer science, granted, but sometimes... well.
Yesterday evening, in the pub (aha! at least I'm prising myself away from the blasted machine sometimes!) we were having a quiz, as the pub does every Sunday. Half way through, as usually happens at pub quizzes, food was served. Chilli con carne with rice. Now, the two pots, one containing chilli, one containing rice, were placed on the bar, and a queue formed behind them.
The couple of people in front of me all did the same thing - they took a ladleful of rice, put that on the plate, then took a ladleful of chilli, and put that on the plate. Then they walked off and the next person did the same thing.
When it came to my turn, I put some rice on my plate, and as I was putting the chilli on, the person behind me (who also happens to be a computer science student) had the nice idea of going for the rice at the same time I was taking the chilli. "Hmm," he said, "I'll do that while you're doing this." Now, the first thought - the very first thought - that entered my head, and which I simultaneously told to the guy behind, was this.
"Ooh, pipelining!"
A few seconds passed. Realisation dawned.
"I don't believe I just said that."
One of the others in the queue, not a computer scientist, said, "what?"
I gave the only answer which I knew would mean I wouldn't have to explain it. "Computer Science joke."
"Aw, go away."
