While building that house, we often would have extra guys hired for a few days, who would then leave for better (easier) work days/weeks later.
Each time we had a new guy, we'd have to test him a little...
My favorite was handing the guy a 2x4 to be used as a cat (the short horizontal 2x4s between studs, the vertical 2x4s in a wall) and ask him to take it down and cut it to 14.25" - the board we gave him was about 13" long.
Out of seven or eight that I saw, most would bring back the short board and complain. Only ONE noticed the 2x4 was too short, and got a replacement, and cut it to the correct size, and presented it as if nothing had happened. (later on, he admitted he didn't even realise it was a test - he thought we just handed a scrap the wrong size, and did what had to be done. We kept him around.)
