I know this sounds stupid	by trogl	2003-11-03 12:57:30
but check the network cable. Otherwise, I suspect some sort of naming services issue. The PC's that have a drive mapping will be constantly making sure the connection is still there and will remember the name. The other machine will be doing a WINS request. You might also want to find out where this machine has authenticated. It may (God knows why) have picked a BDC in the boonies.
