Saddam....... by radiowave9112006-11-19 12:55:59
It's unfortunate that the mass perception... by ByteMeDammit 2003-11-03 12:29:47
...of what our military's primary purpose is is so distorted. I'm not going to get into any discussions concerning the right or wrong of our presence in Iraq, but having already served my country during Desert Storm, I would like to comment about the images shown in this 'film'.

The images showing our technical warmaking capabilities aren't disturbing at all. We advance military tech for one primary purpose and I believe strongly in the justification of that purpose: defense of our national borders. In general, our military forces aren't properly trained and/or equiped to handle the conflict as it currently stands in Iraq. S.W.A.T. type police training is required and the vast majority of the 160k or so soldiers currently embroiled in that conflict haven't received police based training. They were trained to use their superior tech to completely destroy and/or neutralize any military based opposition. I'm not particularly happy with their being in the situation as it stands.

The only disturbing part of this video for me is the call and answer being shown by the soldiers in formation (presumably) at basic training. Certainly a soldier's duty can involve killing of an enemy, but to glorify that killing and instill in them the thirst for it is just plain wrong. Very few soldiers in past conflicts that actually engaged and killed the enemy in a visible manner to their own eyes revel in doing so after the fact. Even bomber pilots of WWII reflect back and are visibly disturbed by what they did. Justification can't take all the guilt away. Some very disturbing footage of US forces shooting a wounded and incapacitated Iraqi was shown on CNN the other night. They cheered... I wasn't there and can't say for sure that he presented no further immediate threat or that the situation did on did not called for it (the segment was very breif) but their cheering sickened me. I also can't say that under similar cercumstances I would most definately not behaved in a like manner but I hope I wouldn't. As time goes by I'm sure those present that day will reflect back. Maybe not.

I am no pacifist and will defend my country even unto death. Were I still in the military I would follow orders as I swore to do.

I do agree with control, however. Tasteless 'expression' of support for those of our own stuck in Iraq.

Here's to hoping they get to come home soon.
