NOLA... You are supposing... by nelzie2003-11-03 06:45:27
OK, time to dig in and respond. by NOLAWitch 2003-11-03 10:41:58
Yes, my parents cared about me and how I did in school. I would have gotten punished for crappy grades and truancy. I was encouraged to do well and rewarded with books, which I loved.

My friend who went to New Orleans public schools 30 years ago had parents who cared about him too. They were good Catholics who couldn't afford parochial school. If they had been able to afford it, that's where the three kids would have gone. Conditions back then were deteriorating and it's a lot worse now. I've read several articles in the local papers about the horrid conditions that I wouldn't subject my cats to let alone anyone else's offspring. Inner city parents have little choice in whether they send their kids to crappy schools or not. School attendance is compulsory.

As for parents not caring, if they have to be similary compelled to go to parenting classes by court order or by Child Protective Services (CPS), then that's better than no intervention at all. If they show no improvement, they should have their kids taken away. There's nothing that can be done for the average crack addict to make him or her a better parent. Their sole interest in life is getting more crack. I disagree vehemently with the CPS directive to keep kids with their parents in cases where the parents have little chance of rehabilitating themselves.

Improvement has to start somewhere and if incremental differences can be made in children's lives, I see that the benefit outweighs the cost. If there is nothing, no programs, no daycare, no parenting classes, no lunches, there is no way for some of these kids to thrive. They will only slip further and further into the abyss of poverty and despair.

If you don't see that there is any way for money to be an assisting factor, what DO you think would help? How can people be cajoled into being better parents?
