Our ancestors (like the modern Inuit) didn't use every part of the animal because they thought it was good - they HAD to use it. Killing an whale, bear, or even a deer or a seal is a lot of work - they rarely had a surplus of meat, or bone, or any food. It would be like saying "I use every penny of a dollar" (No, I wasn't there either, but I followed the anthro stuff in college - it seemed neat at the time, but dead)
