I went to the Perth Gay Pride parade last night by DragonLady 2003-11-01 18:53:13
(Its Sunday here already)

It was a little disappointing, shorter than normal, and not well organised. There were big gaps in it, and not enough "outliers" working the crowd to fill them in. The costumes were good though, and some of the floats were very good. There was a "tap dogs" float with caged lesbians tapping their thing. And of course the Perth Marching Boys were brilliant. The parade started with Dykes on Bikes (and some guys this time), and there were only a few of them, not the normal phalanx. They did have very big bikes though :) There were three people who I think would normally have been fire-eaters, but they were using batons and poi with silver streamers attached. Maybe they couldnt get permission to use real fire. Odd, because they have in the past.

All the usual players were there - Connections, AIDS Council, and their (I think) major sponsor this year Relationships Australia. One group even had paper sculpture lanterns (of a kind). I think the City of Perth reducing the parade funding has hit them hard. The City did have a "float" - Councillor Max Kay on a council buggy with a large banner. Since he is an entertainer from way back he at least managed to make it good. The gay police have formed their own association, but there were only a few marching, and it looks like they didnt have permission to wear uniform. The parade started and finished with drummng groups - the Sambanistas first, and the Wambanistas last. The Sambanistas were all in white and silver - and very good. The Wambanistas were in rainbows .. not quite so good, but not bad.

I got interviewed by a guy doing a survey for Pride aimed at showing the council what they were missing if they lose the parade - questions about how much I would spend, how I got there, did I know the sponsors.

I finished up watching the parade surrounded by a group of lesbians all about my age, who were labelled as cowards by some friends who were in the parade for not having the guts to march. :) Which was a little odd, 'cos they struck me as being pretty gutsy ladies :)
