Finally decided on which Linux to get by Funky_Monkey2006-11-19 12:55:59
ok here are some I use you might like by Celticess2006-11-19 12:55:59

btw lineak is better than hotkeys by Celticess 2003-11-01 15:28:15
for using multimedia keys on your keyboard... I've remapped my keyboard to launch xmms as my music prog(by pressing play and play still controls it playing too or pausing), and the media key launches mplayer... My back key does gaim, forward does xchat, reload does pan, search does xnview, folder does emelfm, home does gnome-pim, at aka email does fetchyahoo, terminal does the gnome multi terminal and the calculator does kunit.

All thease run in openbox. They would also work in any gnustep type window manager like afterstep or windowmaker as well. Or another other black box related thing just fine. However kde and gnome don't necisarily handle the wm dock apps quite the same. I unless a *box window manager has been used as the one inside of gnome and as a replacement for kde. Word to the wise kde is hell to compile and install it is piggy gnome isn't as bad tho... Openbox or other *box or gnustep type window managers take only a few moments to compile and install.(took like 15 min or less on this machine which is a 1GHz t-bird)

Mplayer and it's pluggin are great for all your multi media needs for the most part. It does real format, quick time, and windows amoung other common formats. It makes it so you don't need to neciarly install realone for nix or run quicktime under wine. I can also watch my dvd's with mplayer.(you might need lib dvd nav tho for dvd's in some cases to set the region in mplayer)

Xmms plays ogg and a variety of audio formats and it also has some rather cool visual and sound plugins. It also takes winamp 2 skins.(so I tend to use same skins in both OS on my system)

gtkdisk free is like kdiskfree but of course doesn't need kde so is quick to install. Thats what I tried several of thease for. I wanted good stuff that was quick and wouldn't take forever to compile. Xnview is comparable to thumbsplus in windows and I highly recommend it.

There are also somethings for pda's such as coldsync and gnome-pilot that you might want if you have a pda. For webcams I suggest getting xawtv, camstream, and came. They do a wonderful job of streaming, video capture, and regular ftp'ing of cam images to a site.

Largorecipies and limewire are both java... so at times can have a bit of that java slowness. But are very good programs. Largo does mealmaster formats amoungst other things and is one of the best open source recipe management programs I've seen so far that works in nix. Limewire is a p2p client but I like it better than gtknutella and others I've tried so far for nix.

Electric sheep just rocks... what more can I say... There is a real nice other screensaver for nix called rss-glx and that is the really slick screensaver port to nix. Warning tho some systems don't like the port and will freeze which is why I didn't link to it.

In gentoo there is one funky tool called ufed. I'm not sure if it works with other distros otherwise I'd of linked that. That one lets you edit your USE flags in make and explains what each flag means briefly. It's a nice console app that actually is graphical(the the sense of old dos programs)... MC aka midnight commander also rocks and looks like an old dos file manager.

One other filemanager you might like and that I tried for awhile was endeavour2. It is like the windows one. It has a trashcan and looks quite a bit like explorer. It offers a image browser that shows thumbnails(but it wont also edit files like xnview does), and it also has an archive app.(which is quite nice tho I tend to use arc which you can get standalone tho it does come in kde utils package...)

Btw if you go with a non gnome/kde window manager don't let that deter you from using some kde/gnome packages if you really like them. You can use components of both window managers without fully installing them. However it does require you use some of their libraries so in the case of kde that means a several hour compile of kdelibs, etc... and for gnome it means maybe an hour compile of a few of it's libs.(such as cobra and libonobo)

Any other questions feel free to ask. :) I've used nix since mandrake 6.5 existed tho I don't use mandrake anymore I've tried alot of programs and stuff.
