and a good number of my male students are a tad taller than me. And none of the females are shorter than my sister (who is considered short, but not unusually so). BTW: Manners in provincial NE China are somewhat... different... to what us Westerners might prefer. My biggesr ERK around here is people spitting in corridoors and stairwells. It's quite normal behavior. SARS vector anybody? But farting publicly is a no no here too, so I think you've just got a regular jerk, indopendent of cultural background - every culture has an annoyingly prominant number of them. I've taken up explicitly looking for courtious behaviour around me recently (and finding a refreshing amount of it). It's too easy to just notice all the obnoxious types and get excessively annoyed.
