Attorney fees: $381,231.45 paid plus $90,000 to bring the account current (Total: $471,231.45)
Jury Award: $1,290,000.00 (after reduction for Terri's contributory negligence) for Terri's malpractice, and $600,000 awarded to the husband for his losses (Total: $1,890,000.00)
Other Peoples' Gifts... are not being calculated into this as they aren't pertinent to attorney fees. However, that's even more showing that the attorneys aren't getting "almost everything".
$471,231.45 divided by $1,890,000.00 is .2493288...
25% is lower than most lawyers would charge if they took this case on contingency (generally, contingency tends to be around 30%). So either they're nice and agreed to a lower contingency, or they charged by the hour (and are only being paid for actual work).
However, your claim that "the lawyers will get almost everything" is unfounded, and your sarcastic remark is hurtful.
The lawyers here appear to be being ethical with their fees.
... I wonder how much would have been awarded by the jury (or agreed to in settlement) had there been no lawyers on the case. |
