Trying to serve your country, recognizing that service comes in many forms. But military service can and should be a mind-broadening experience, giving the recipient exposure to other cultures and beliefs. Obviously it isn't always, but I guess I'm just optimistic that something good should come out of it, that is more than learning to kill. Peace Corps, provides that sort of exposure, perhaps United Nations Aide could too, I don't claim to have a comprehensive list. But I would like to think that there are other ways of serving your country, besides military service.

If the goal isn't service to country, but rather is simply to make sure every citizen knows how to fight in case of emergency, then make every eligible person be a part of the reserves throughout a certain period of their lives.

Just some ideas.
