| We needed to share our connection long before we could get DSL, so we set up a Firewall/MASQ box using an old 486 (1.4 floppy, no hard disk, 16mB, NIC, ancient VGA card, part-time monitor) and a 28.8 modem. I downloaded the Coyote Linux tar-file, made the diskette and plugged it into the office hub. The worst problem I had with it was using the crappy text editor, but hey, it fit on the diskette!
By the time we got DSL, I had upgraded the box to 20mB (free upgrade), the modem to 56K and built a firewall on the diskette. I never had a problem with Coyote Linux.
When we got DSL, I set the DSL modem up for RFC 2516 (PPPoE) Routing Mode, added a second NIC and rebuilt the Coyote floppy to support the second NIC, otherwise the setup is the same. We even kept the old diskette and ISP for backup.
