| WinXP firewall should be... |

...fried in batter, smothered in boiling chilli sauce, covered in sodium solution, and then thrown out of a 23rd storey window. Fast. >:[
My reason:
We got a worm on our computer. Oh, the horror(!)
But, the virus-scanner caught it before it did anything, so *that*'s all right.
It arrived while I had the firewall disabled so I could host Worms games. You can imagine the parental blamemongering.
I've been saying continuously that we should get a firewall that can allow specific programs, however the only one said parent knows about is ZoneAlarm. It only supports LANs in the version you have to pay for, and she's a tightfisted penny-pincher, so she isn't willing to pay for it.
So, she let the XP firewall lull her into a false sense of security, and blamed me when a worm got in. That's *not* so 'all right'.
The upshot of this is that I am no longer allowed to do anything that requires disabling the firewall.
Another upshot of this is that I am now adamant that we should get a *real* firewall. Unfortunately, it'll have to be freeware. Any suggestions?
PS: I'm betting the worm would have got in anyway. I don't trust anything of that importance that you can toggle with a single tickbox. |
