to see if you have networking, get a command prompt (it's called Konsole if you're just booting Knoppix) and type in "/sbin/ifconfig".
Example:
mcnutcase@mcnutbox mcnutcase $ /sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:21:69:9F:A9
          inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Bcast:xxx.xxx.xxx.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:766388 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:260724 errors:18 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:18
          collisions:22968 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:173014231 (164.9 Mb) TX bytes:27790085 (26.5 Mb)
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0xd000

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
          RX packets:104 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:104 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
