for this purpose ( living will ) and some others along that line. 13 years ago i still was working in a hospital when the livng will was becoming in vogue, because of issue like this. People where talking about it. This subject may have come up in vconverstaion between husband and wife - that does not necessarily mean that it went on to family and friends. Often these kind of discussions are fairly private, particualrly back then. These days, about every time you step in a hospital for an overnight stay, they ask you if you have such a document, and if not if you would like to create one. It is too easy to project current sensibilities into the past and think they where common place back then.
