Bush is at it again... by Naruki2006-11-19 12:55:59
You guys haven't heard the entire story by crash_ 2003-10-22 06:21:43
The reason for keeping her alive isn't because she is a Christian. It is because she is still coherent even though she appears vegetative. The Christian right to live groups have become involved in this case, but it did not start with them. Her husband (who is actually married to someone else now so technically he doesn't have a say over her life since legally they are not connected but somehow he found a loophole) claims she said she did not want to live this way. Since Terry didn't have a living will, we have no way of confirming this. Meanwhile, she does have her eyes open and does respond to her parents when they talk to her. Michael wants the feeding tube removed so Terry will starve to death. Her family up til now had to sit back helpless and watch. Floridians demanded that Jeb Bush step in and do something about it, but he couldn't up til now since he did not have the authority. Last night the Florida Legislature passed a law allowing him to make a say in this case. Michael immediately tried to appeal, but not a judge in this state cares to drag this out any further and I think he may have finally hit a brick wall in this case.

If this were as simple as a woman's right to die, then I don't think anyone would care that much. Unfortunately there is money involved. Michael has won quite a few millions of dollars in malpractice suits but cannot collect the money til Terry dies. Currently there is a push in Florida to pass a law that will limit malpractice settlements to only $250,000. It stands to reason that if this drags out much longer, Michael could find himself getting substantially less money than he would if she would just die now. He claims that the reason her family wants her alive is they want a cut of the money too. Honestly, I have seen no evidence to back that up, and the family insists they are trying to keep her alive so they can pursue options such as teaching her to feed herself, etc. I have seen the video coverage on tv, Terry is not as vegetative as her husband has claimed.

Let this be a lesson to all of you. If you don't want to live your life as a vegetable should, God forbid, something happens, then get a living will in place now! Once a person is on life support, it is hard to prove that removing it is not murder.
