Mao is Chinese for cat. by glenalec 2003-10-22 04:49:51
Chairman Mao was sometimes affectionatly called 'Chairman Cat' (by changing the tone from rising 'ao' (in his real name) to flat 'ao' (in cat) ).

This sort of thing goes on in China a lot. Shao Ping (former leader - possibly spelt wrong) takes just a few tone changes to mean 'small bottle' and during his contestency for the post, shopowners would discretely display their support for his candidacy by arranging stacks of small bottles in their windows.... Some considerable years later some drunk US Embassy staff were tossing their beer bottles into a central-Beijing pond late one night until they were chased off by park-keepers. Newspapers the following day reported it as a protest against the leadership by persons un-aprehended.
