is it bad if one of my hard drives is singing? by cybergeek2003-10-22 01:03:17
My oldest drive sings, too by tumppu 2003-10-22 01:26:00
...and being a 40 gig one, it's not that old. A very clearly heard *whiiirrr* sound, which can go on for a minute, then die out slowly, only to re-emerge later. I thought it was one of the 3 fans in the comp, but no, it's the drive. Good thing I've been planning to replace it anyhow.

The fans have a different sound to them, usually caused by the mechanism loosening up enough that the actual fan starts vibrating.
