is it bad if one of my hard drives is singing? by cybergeek2003-10-22 01:03:17
  It's bad allright by silentcoder 2003-10-22 01:13:45
You see the read heads in a hard drive never actually touch the plates, so there is only the spinning sound.

If something goes wrong mechanically, the read heads do touch the plates. If it's only on parts of the spin you get a clacka-clacka noise, on the full spin, a kind of whine.

The result is that the heads are now scraping the magnetic media off of the plates - your drive does not seem to have much lifespan left.

The fact that a shut down helped suggests that the damage isn't too bad yet, probably it only touches under heat expansion - but it does mean you will be seeing more and more disk errrors and soon - no disk at all.

Anyway 3 and 6 gig drives must be pretty old - they had a good run, let them rest in peace now :)
