I'm NOT going to run a Linux box for this. NO. NOT EVEN if it's the best solution. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. There is a reason for this; it's because I want visits to my SO's house to be fun, and not full of housemates moaning about the power bills and the flakiness of the big ugly noisy thing on the landing. Nor do I want the hassle of finding a suitable box. NEW MODEM. Plastic NAT box. Switch. Lengths of cat-5. THAT is what is needed. Now is anyone going to tell me what to avoid?
