a mindless automaton driven to simply 'obey, obey, obey'. If anything, I have a great appreciation for the day when I rejoin civilian society and am allowed to simply refuse to do something without explaining it to my chain of command.
Many people seem to have this view that the military, particularly American military, is all about doing what we're told by our higher ups without questions... and yes, that does have it's place in a military organization where disobeying an order may kill you... but it's not all that way. A large difference between the US and other militaries of the world is that people are given freedom of action within a certain set of rules. The higher up, the greater the leeway. But even a E-1 Private has some leeway.
In most discussions about the US military, this is cited as one of it's strongest assets. We're unpredictable, not doctrinal.
