is the problem of 'too many people vote for these generals'. My thought is that situation is exacerbated by the fact that Israel is surrounded by nations hostile to its survival, to put it mildly. If your country is not at war from without, you have war within (Palestinian/Israeli clashes). In such an area, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that people look to generals for guidance outside the military as well as inside it.
Put Israel between Mexico and Canada, with major oceanic gaps around everything else and I believe the dependence on generals for government would decrease drastically.
As for the police and others putting their life on the line, see a better description of Heinlein's society in killgrinch's post. I left out the non-military federal service options. As I stated to Illiad, I would accept that policemen and others who put their lives at risk for democratic government would get the right to vote. |
