That you support what your nation is doing. I don't. Why shouldn't I have the right to vote against what I feel is wrong, simply because I completely disagree with what the nation is doing? If this were active in America now, I would not have the right to vote at all. I am a pacifist. My country is being anything BUT a pacifist. Why should I help it by performing some civil service for it's military? I have a right, under our current constitution to voice that opinion. I pray that it never changes.
Admittedly, I feel that the US gov't is really screwed up. And primarily, that is because of voter apathy. However, a requirement like this is -not- the answer, and never will be. It excludes many groups that have every right to voice their opinion.
Now, a completely different concept that has potential, perhaps...
Require all of those who wish to gain the right to vote to take a year long course on political science. They must understand the constitution, the methods of getting a law created, the concept of justice, and the concept of equality.
It still has some problems, but with a little work, it might be a plausible solution. |
