however, they still had a military. I doubt very much that Switzerland would have remained neutral with no military to back up it's claim. Perhaps you have no nearby aggressors now, but that does not mean you have no need of a military.
Nationalistic pride may get your hackles up, but it is a reason people join their country's military.
Civil Service as a waste of money is only true if you believe your military has no point and no value.
College money offered in the US for military service is somewhere between $3K and $20K just for an enlistment bonus (with $40K for some jobs), plus the Montgomery GI Bill (approx. $20K, I forget offhand), as well as the Army College fund, which can be up to another $40K. Another option is for college loan repayment, where you already have your degree and they pay back your student loans outright. I do not see this as 'mere scraps'. |
