I myself have friends who are pacifists and objectors. One in particular serves in my section. He's still serving, and putting his life on the line, with the idea that he won't fire a shot.

My feelings about serving next to him in combat aside (nervousness), I still respect his ability to serve and yet maintain his integrity.

Do not take the 'must serve in military' as the only way... perhaps some form of community service could be added for pacifists and consciencious objectors.
