"The core problem doesn't originate within the school. The core problem is some (or many) nasty little bastidges who haven't learned how to behave in civilized society and who prey upon others. They don't learn that in school (I hope)."
"The biggest difficulty in dealing with bullying today is the lack of proof-level evidence. In the old days, the problem was that parents would tell you to just "stick up for yourself" (ask nin_man, he still holds that view). They would dismiss it as kids being kids."
I know a kid who's still in high school who got picked on last year. Some kids started a fight with him, he defended himself, and HE got suspended LONGER than the kids who started the fight did! I would dare say that the problem in dealing with bullying isn't the lack of proof-level evidence, it's the fact that the administration are a bunch of retards who don't even want to deal with the problem properly. (BTW, I've seen this exact scenario many times, including while I was in high school... someone who defends himself gets punished more harshly than those doing the bullying).
If this is the message they're sending to bullies, I can't say that I agree with the sentiment that "They don't learn that in school". Well, OK. They may or may not *learn* it in school (some kids will show up with those attitudes, others will learn it from their 'friends'), but the lesson is certainly reinforced there. Installing cameras is just another way of not dealing with the problem.
"violent crimes are being committed, and the schools are being held responsible for the actions of kids they cannot control ... they usually cannot prove that certain students are guilty of such behavior well enough to get them kicked out of school or arrested."
See above. It's been my experience that the schools don't WANT to collect said evidence because it's too much hassle (legal, dealing with the kid's parents, etc) to do so. In the past, schools taught social skills and propriety as well as formal (book-based) lessons. It seems that schools are completely ignoring the former lately, and aren't doing so hot in the latter either.
It's still my belief that cameras are *not* the solution. They don't *solve* anything, they just push the problem away so that someone else has to deal with it. We're living in a society where nothing is anyone's problem, so problems keep growing until they're out of control. |
